Teaching English

The Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) program began implementation in 1993 and was the first program for Peace Corps within Moldova. Working in cooperation with the Moldovan Ministry of Education, (now Ministry of Education and Youth) this program was designed to address the critical need for teachers of English within the public school system as well as the lack of English language educational resources available to both teachers and students.

Volunteers assigned to the TEFL program work with three groups: students, teachers, and institutions. Working directly with students inside and outside of the classroom, volunteers help them to improve their English, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills and to develop a greater environmental awareness. They also seek to broaden the students' awareness of issues affecting their local communities, Moldova, and the rest of the world. Working directly with their teaching colleagues, volunteers implement a series of training workshops designed to enhance the ability of teachers to include content-based instruction in their classrooms. At the institutional level, volunteers work with their schools and communities to improve the quality and the quantity of resource materials available for teaching and learning the English language.

TEFL Volunteers also work with members of their host communities to identify needs, assess available resources, and develop plans for community projects that will address the identified community needs. Examples of projects undertaken and implemented by volunteers and their schools or communities include: summer camps and activities for children and youth, school debate clubs, English clubs, drama clubs, participation in Odyssey of the Mind and Model United Nations competitions, adult English classes, publication of English language newsletters, opening of resource centers, etc.

This section is meant to provide resources developed by Peace Corps volunteers for English teachers in Moldova. These resources include pre-made Long-Term plans and Lesson Plans based on the requirements of the National Curriculum and the standard textbooks used in Moldova. Furthermore, this section also makes available topical lessons and grammatical lessons that go beyond the National Curriculum. This section also provides information on seminars, lesson planning, developing teaching materials, classroom management, and useful outside links for ESL and TEFL.
